Personalised VR stress management for hospital patients

STREAM is a European project developing a system that estimates stress using short questionnaires and wearable physiological signals, then personalises VR therapy with haptics to enrich the VR therapy experience.

Clinical rationale

Hospital environments are high-stress settings with documented effects on staff and patient outcomes. STREAM evaluates combined interventions using immersive virtual reality and continuous biosensing to objectively measure physiological stress markers (heart rate variability) alongside validated self-reported outcomes. The protocol emphasizes reproducibility, data integrity, and patient safety across multiple clinical sites.

Technical pillars

Real-time Biofeedback

Medical-grade sensors from Corsano capture continuous cardiovascular and physiological data in real-time, enabling objective outcome measurement and adaptive intervention protocols.

Personalized VR Therapy

Content selection via SyncVR adjusts immersive scenarios based on individual stress profiles, optimizing therapeutic engagement and clinical efficacy.

Clinical Integration

ESD's secure CHES portal provides GDPR-compliant data management, patient portals, electronic questionnaires, and secure data capture and storage.

Patient journey

Clinical Identification & Onboarding

A patient facing a long-term stay is identified by the care team as having elevated stress. The patient is equipped with a medical-grade bracelet for continuous physiological monitoring.

Bio-Digital Profiling

The patient completes a validated stress questionnaire via a patient portal. This creates a combined baseline of psychological and physiological stress patterns.

VR Content Personalization

This baseline is used to select an optimal immersive environment. Ensuring the experience is tailored to the patient's specific needs.

Real-Time Adaptive Therapy

Immersive VR session with real-time biofeedback loop enables stress reduction and adaptive therapeutic response.

Clinical feasibility pilot study: call for hospital sites

We invite hospital partners to participate in structured pilot studies. Participation includes protocol training, device provisioning, ethics collaboration, and publication of findings. Timelines and support are flexible based on site feasibility.
